2016 Radio Scouting Calendar

A few years ago, a group of amateur radio operators formed a Radio Scouting committee for Rainbow Council BSA. Our mission is to introduce Scouts to amateur radio and other STEM fields.

Our committee met yesterday to plan the upcoming program year.

And we have an aggressive year to plan.

Technician Class License Course

August 20, 2016 to October 15, 2016
Fountaindale Public Library
300 West Briarcliff Road, Bolingbrook

This is our most ambitious project, an 8-week amateur radio license class. Besides earning the Technician Class license, Scouts will complete three merit badges: Radio, Electricity, and Electronics.  Space is limited to 25 Boy Scouts.

The course is available to Scouts from Rainbow, Three Fires, and W. D. Boyce Councils.

Jamboree on the Air

October 14-16, 2016
Location To Be Determined

K9RSR JOTA

Jamboree on the Air is the largest Scouting event in the world. Each year, a million Scouts take part in 150 countries, led by 20,000 amateur radio operators.

We have some great ideas for making JOTA a big event this year, perhaps even a Camporee. We will offer the Radio merit badge as well as the opportunity to qualify for the More Code Interpreter Strip.

I will post more details in the coming weeks.
