Earn Your Ham Radio License Like a Boy Scout

Ham Radio and Boy Scouts have a long history together. Signaller was one of the original 14 “Badges of Merit” introduced in 1910. Wireless, introduced in 1918, became Radio in 1923, and remains a popular choice among Scouts.

That the fundamentals of radio communication have been so prevalent in Scouting for so long indicate how important those skills are.

And Scouts here in Illinois have the opportunity to get in the game.

Rainbow Council has partnered with Three Fires Council here in Illinois to offer a unique program for First Class Scouts (and above).

Beginning this August, Scouts can earn both the Radio and Electronics Merit Badge while earning their Technician Class amateur radio license.

The program is like a science class and will take 8 weeks to complete. In that time, Scouts will use radio to talk with people all over the world. They will learn how to draw and read schematic diagrams, learn how to solder electronic components, and join a hobby that has a rich history of technical innovation and experimentation.

The program will be taught by the Rainbow Council’s Radio Scouting Committee. Participation is limited to 20 Scouts, Ventures, Varsity or Sea Scouts who are 14 and at least First Class (or equivalent).

Register online here. Registration closes August 1st.

Classes begin August 20, 2016 at Fountaindale Public Library in Bolinbrook.
